Critically Sick & Injured

Critically Sick & Injured

When Queenslanders are seriously injured, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) is the place many will come for critical care. Whether injured through car accidents, assaults, burns, or critically ill with disease or infection, patients can depend on care from a team of medical experts that are leaders in their fields.

At the core of every treatment, is a culture of delivering the very best in evidence-based practice and if our Team Royal can’t find the research they require, they are committed to undertaking that research on your behalf, and with the funding support of RBWH Foundation.

The RBWH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treats 2,000 patients each year with a 92 per cent survival rate, making it one of the top three Intensive Care Units in Australia for positive outcomes.

ICU antibiotics research, largely led by RBWH Ambassador for Research and Senior Consultant Specialist Professor Jeffery Lipman, has already changed world practice. “RBWH is using what’s called off-label dosing virtually every day to help our patients because the standard dosing you get from a pharmacist hasn’t been tested in the group of critically-ill patients that we see,” explained Professor Lipman.

If patients have been involved in an accident resulting in burns, they are first treated and stabilised in Intensive Care, then referred to RBWH Professor Stuart Pegg Adult Burns Unit for more specialised, ongoing treatment. The Burns Unit at RBWH is internationally recognised in medical publications as having the best burns outcomes in the world, with just a two per cent mortality rate.

The combined expertise of RBWH's critical care team has been recognised with the established of the Burns, Trauma and Critical Care Research Centre. With public support funding crucial research, critical care experts at RBWH participate in world-leading research and education in a quest to keep pushing the frontiers of medical care for critically ill patients.

For RBWH Giving Day, your donation will be doubled, doubling your impact. All donations will go towards RBWH critical priorities to advance patient care and life-saving research.
